DIRECTIONS FOR CLEANING SILVER, VERMEIL & 2-TONE JEWELRY & CHAINS

All silver will tarnish when exposed to air, especially cigarette smoke, wood smoke from indoor stoves and gasoline fumes. The glue in some boxes can also cause tarnishing.

Silver, Vermeil & 2-Toned jewelry & can be cleaned using the following methods:

  1. Combine 1 qt. of very hot water, 1 tsp. salt and 1 tsp baking soda in a flat glass container that has been lined with aluminum foil. Add silver to be cleaned, making sure it comes in contact with the foil. Leave for approximately 2 minutes. Remove jewelry with a wooden spoon, rinse in hot water and dry well before storing.

  2. Purchase Hagerty Silver Clean (a liquid), which is available at most fine jewelry and department stores. It is an instant cleaning solution. Quickly dip the jewelry, DON’T SOAK, it is a strong solution. Rinse in hot soapy water. Then rinse again. Pat dry.
  3. Silver jewelry can also be cleaned with toothpaste.
  4. Treated Polishing Cloths can be used on all silver jewelry only. DO NOT USE TREATED CLOTHS on VERMEIL (gold plate over silver) or 2-TONE JEWELRY. THE CHEMICALS in the CLOTHS WILL REMOVE THE PLATING.

Note: To help prevent silver from tarnishing, it is suggested you keep it in zip-lip plastic bags.
